Apraxia of Speech

Specialized therapy for children who have difficulty planning and coordinating speech movements.

What Is Childhood Apraxia of Speech?

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) is a motor planning disorder that affects how the brain coordinates the movements needed for speech. Children with CAS know what they want to say, but their bodies have difficulty executing the precise movements required to produce speech sounds.

With specialized therapy, children with CAS can make meaningful progress in developing clearer speech. We celebrate every step forward and work with your family to support growth.

Signs Your Child Might Have CAS

If your child shows several of these signs, an evaluation might be helpful:

  • Speech that is difficult to understand, even for familiar listeners
  • Inconsistent errors on the same words (saying a word differently each time)
  • Difficulty with longer words or phrases
  • Groping or searching movements when trying to speak
  • Better understanding than speaking ability
  • Limited babbling or sound play as a baby

How We Help

CAS typically benefits from specialized, frequent therapy. We use a combination of evidence-based approaches, including PROMPT and Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), combined with play-based techniques. Lauren is PROMPT Level 2 trained and uses DTTC, and many of our clinicians are also PROMPT trained:

1

Motor Planning Techniques

We use a combination of approaches, including PROMPT and DTTC, to help your child's brain organize and execute the movements needed for speech.

2

Consistent Practice

CAS responds well to consistent, repetitive practice. We build this into therapy and teach you how to support it at home.

3

Multi-Sensory Cueing

We use visual, auditory, and tactile cues to help your child understand and produce speech sounds more accurately.

4

Partner with Your Family

We teach you strategies and techniques so therapy continues at home. Consistency is key for children with CAS.
