What to expect at your child's first visit
A first visit should feel calm for you and fun for your child. Evaluations are play-based and follow your child's interests, with breaks whenever your child needs them. Here is what usually happens.
Before you come.
You send us a short inquiry through Jotform. If Calendly opens after you submit, you can schedule a 15-minute intake call—not an evaluation appointment. We usually reply within 1 to 2 business days, answer your questions, and can talk through fees and insurance before your visit. Before the evaluation we send consent forms and a background history form for you to fill out.
At the clinic.
You park in our lot and come into a warm, cozy, calming space. A first evaluation takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half, depending on the type of evaluation.
During the evaluation.
Before you leave.
We review and score the test with you right there and go over what the scores mean. We give you preliminary recommendations based on the scores and what we saw. You will not leave an evaluation not knowing where things stand.
After.
Within 10 business days you receive a written report. It describes what happened, our recommendations, how often we recommend therapy if therapy is recommended, and possible treatment goals.
How the evaluation goes
Young children and early language evaluations (up to age 5):
A parent or caregiver stays in the room. We start on the floor with toys while your child explores and warms up, and we talk with you about your concerns. We make clinical observations as your child plays. A lot of what we learn comes from talking with you, so parents are required to be in the room for children up to age 5.
School-age children (5 and up):
Depending on the type of language concern, the evaluation can be more structured. Your child answers questions and works with the therapist, with breaks as needed. Parents are welcome to stay in the room. We review the scores with you afterward.
For your child
Hi! You will play with toys and games and talk with a friendly speech therapist. There are no shots and nothing that hurts. Your grown-up can stay with you.
